Since the broadcast e-mail of March 13th, announcing the establishment of the President's Advisory Committee for the selection of a new Associate Vice-President, Enrolment Services, and Registrar, the advisory committee has met twice.

To: All UBC Students, Faculty and Staff

Since the broadcast e-mail of March 13th, announcing the establishment of the President’s Advisory Committee for the selection of a new Associate Vice-President, Enrolment Services, and Registrar, the advisory committee has met twice. The committee has reviewed the Candidate Profile and Opportunities and Challenges (found within the Executive Brief), the development of which was informed by consultations conducted by our search consultant, Brent Cameron, of Odgers Berndtson; and the committee’s suggestions for revisions have been incorporated. The committee has also heard from Lisa Collins, Associate Vice-President, Enrolment Services and Registrar pro tem, about the role and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead; and from Linda McKnight, Director, HR Advisory Services, on equity and diversity in the recruitment and selection process.

The advertisement has been distributed nationally and internationally in print and web-based media, and extensive networks will be used to source potential candidates and nominations. The Executive Brief is the document that will be used to attract interest in the position. Both documents can be found on the websites of the Provost’s Offices of UBC’s Vancouver campus (http://www.vpacademic.ubc.ca) and UBC’s Okanagan campus (http://provost.ok.ubc.ca).

We invite you to forward any names of potential candidates to Brent Cameron (brent.cameron@odgersberndtson.ca). Potential candidates will be approached confidentially, and all discussion relating to names, or other identifying details, of potential candidates will be kept strictly confidential to the members of the search committee.

As Dr. Wesley Pue will be stepping down as Provost and Vice-Principal at UBC-Okanagan before the work of the advisory committee is completed, President Toope has accepted our recommendation that Dr. Gordon Binsted, incoming Interim Provost and Vice-Principal, be appointed to replace Dr. Pue, as Co-chair of the advisory committee. Dr. Binsted will join the advisory committee immediately. We thank Dr. Pue for his contributions to the search process thus far.

The next phase of the search is a quiet one, during which the committee will review and consider potential candidates. We will continue to update the community as the search progresses.

On August 24, 2012, we notified you of the landmark decisions issued by the Supreme Court of Canada and the impact that they would have on UBC.

To: All UBC Students, Faculty and Staff

The following message is sent on behalf of David H. Farrar, Provost and Vice President Academic (Vancouver) and Deborah Buszard, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Principal (Okanagan).

On August 24, 2012, we notified you of the landmark decisions issued by the Supreme Court of Canada and the impact that they would have on UBC. At that time, we also notified you that the House of Commons and the Senate had passed Bill C-11 (The Copyright Modernization Act) and anticipated that it would be proclaimed into law later in 2012. Bill C-11 was proclaimed into force on November 7, 2012. It represents a major shift in the rights and responsibilities of authors, publishers and consumers of copyrighted materials. “Education” is now a specific exception in Canadian copyright law and UBC has updated its guidance documents to reflect this and the many other changes to the Copyright Act.

Available at http://copyright.ubc.ca are the following updated materials:

- Copyright Guidelines for UBC Faculty, Staff and Students,

- Copyright Requirements for UBC Faculty and Staff,

- Fair Dealing Requirements for UBC Faculty and Staff, and

- Digital Classroom and the Physical Classroom Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).

Now that this updated guidance information is available to our academic community, CWL account holders are being notified and asked to review and acknowledge this updated information. As we indicated last August, similar notification and acknowledgement opportunities will occur whenever this information is updated and, in any event, at least annually.

To assist you to understand your rights and obligations under copyright law and UBC’s requirements and guidelines, the Scholarly Communications & Copyright Office is available to advise faculty and staff on the application of UBC’s copyright requirements and guidelines and provide a range of services to support faculty, staff and students in the preparation of their course materials, assignments, presentations and publications.

For a detailed description of the changes made to the Copyright Act, please visit: http://copyright.ubc.ca/copyright-legislation/bill-c-11-the-copyright-modernization-act/.

For more information and new developments about copyright, please consult the Copyright at UBC website at: http://copyright.ubc.ca. If you have any questions about copyright please email ubc-copyright@interchange.ubc.ca and consider attending a workshop: http://copyright.ubc.ca/workshops/.

On June 30, 2014, after eight years in his position as President of the University of British Columbia, one of the world’s leading universities, Professor Stephen Toope will be stepping down to return to his academic and professional pursuits.

To: All UBC Students, Faculty and Staff

On June 30, 2014, after eight years in his position as President of the University of British Columbia, one of the world’s leading universities, Professor Stephen Toope will be stepping down to return to his academic and professional pursuits. He made the announcement on April 3, 2013 to give the University plenty of time to find his successor. That process has now begun, and I write today to ask all members of the University community for their assistance in finding the best possible candidate for this vitally important role.

In accordance with the policies of the Board of Governors and the Senates, a Search Committee of 22 members broadly representative of the University community – faculty, staff, students and alumni – will be selected. For further information on the Committee’s Terms of Reference – including the exact composition of the committee and the process by which members will be selected – please visit: http://bog.ubc.ca.

The Committee’s primary task will be to identify and consider qualified individuals for the position, and to recommend its preferred candidate to the Board for approval. Therefore, the Committee will issue appropriate advertisements for the position, and will seek applications and nominations. An executive search firm with experience in university presidential searches will be engaged to assist the Search Committee. The Committee’s aim is to present its nomination to the Board in time to enable the new President to take office in the summer of 2014.

A critical element of this process is the participation of members of the University community – faculty, staff, students, and alumni – in helping to define the qualities we should look for in our next President.

As Chair of the Search Committee, I invite all members of the UBC community to submit their views and advice on the following:

- opportunities, challenges, issues, and priorities facing the University over the next 5-10 years;

- the key roles and responsibilities of the President in leading UBC through the next 5-10 years;

- the necessary and desirable characteristics, leadership skills, qualifications, values and experience of candidates for the position of President.

The Committee will also welcome your suggestions for prospective candidates. All communications received during this search will be held in the strictest confidence.

I urge you to take part in the search process and share your views with the Committee. Please address your comments and advice to:

Further to the broadcast email of March 14, I am pleased to advise that the Presidentís Advisory Committee met for the first time on April 10 to review the search process. The Call for Applications will also be published in the May 2 edition of the UBC Reports. The Position Profile is the document that will be used to attract interest in the position.

To: All UBC Students, Faculty and Staff

I am delighted to announce that the UBC Board of Governors has reappointed Ms. Lisa Castle, Vice-President Human Resources, for a five-year term starting April 2013. Ms Castle has had two previous terms starting April 15, 2002 first as AVP, and as VP since September 2012.

The Board noted that Ms Castle brings an energetic, consultative, strategic and values-based approach to her position. Her terms have been marked by a careful building of human resources practices across the university and implementation of Focus on People: Workplace Practices at UBC. Lisa was commended for her passion and support of the University. She is recognized as one of the most influential human resources leaders in Canada in higher education.

The Board was impressed by Ms Castle’s contributions over her time at UBC and the high regard in which she is held. In approving her reappointment, the Board acknowledged that Ms Castle has been an innovative member of the University leadership, and has done much to implement Place and Promise: the UBC Plan, and to enhance the people practices at UBC.

To: All UBC Students, Faculty and Staff

I will be stepping down as President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of British Columbia at the end of June 2014, after serving for eight years in what has been an inspiring and rewarding position.

Since joining the University in 2006, I have been daily reaffirmed in my sense that UBC is a unique and remarkable place, filled with dedicated and talented students, professors and staff members who work tirelessly to further human knowledge and make the world better. We are also blessed with a committed group of alumni(ae) who contribute to societies around the globe.

My choice to step down is personal and relates to my desire to work over the next few years in a role more closely connected to my academic and professional interests in international law and international relations. The University is in a remarkably strong position in Canada and globally, and I have no doubt that it will remain on a steep upward trajectory in the years to come.

I give this notice to allow the Board of Governors time to launch a search for a successor to lead a great university. Now is not the time for valedictory remarks as I will be fully occupied with the presidency for another academic year. I look forward to working with you to ensure that UBC continues to fulfill its promise to serve the people of British Columbia, Canada and the world.

Stephen J. Toope
